The “Natural Flow” concept meets all of the ordering systems on several levels. In terms of aesthetics, the buildings are an appropriate scale for the neighborhood context, the concept establishes a new aesthetic for Show Low's future growth, and the design plays off of natural features in the area. Economically, the concept offers strong pedestrian and bike connections to the Deuce and Huning businesses, it offers opportunities for new businesses, it can be easily phased to allow use in existing buildings if necessary, it provides replacements for existing services such as Head Start, and it creates opportunities for large-scale community events such as conferences. Socially, “Natural Flow” creates a variety of gathering spaces for faculty, staff, students, and community members and provides on-campus housing which instills a sense of community and stewardship on site. Taking the environmental ordering system into consideration, the concept’s buildings and paths sit lightly on the land, greenroofs minimize runoff and create habitat, rainwater and greywater is directed toward the central creek feature that allows for cleansing and infiltration, and the buildings and landscape feature a variety of other environmentally friendly techniques. In terms of functional value, the concept offers opportunities for mixed uses, including housing, academics, and entertainment and the circulation paths offer direct routes between destinations. |
